Molecular and Clinical Medicine is one of four Schools in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine and is headed by Professor Stuart Ralston. The School comprises 3 Interdisciplinary Research Centres - the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences (incorporating Clinical Neurosciences and Psychiatry); the Edinburgh Centre for Cancer Research (incorporating the former Division of Oncology), and the Molecular Medicine Centre (incorporating Gastroenterology, Medical Genetics and Rheumatic Diseases) - and the Division of Pathology (also at Teviot Place and Little France). In addition there are smaller interdisciplinary Research Groups (IDGs) in Brain Imaging and the Disorders of the Ageing Brain and a nascent IDG in the Genetics of Complex Disease and Related Traits. The School currently attracts grants of approximately £46M, including a number of full programme grants, and houses over 350 staff including 23 Professors, 69 Academic, 134 Research, 36 Academic Related, 50 Secretarial and 67 Technical and other staff. Research facilities on the WGH campus are extensive, with new buildings for Molecular Medicine/Genetics, Cancer Research, Leukaemia Research, in vivo experimentation and teaching. The campus houses, in a new complex, one of only five Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facilities in the United Kingdom The hospital itself also has a substantial research and development portfolio and this is supported by a full R&D Office and managerial staff based at the RIE. |
